View Full Version: No desktop effects for ATI Radeon Mobility U1

Primarily used vBulletin® version 4.2.5 © © © 2022 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.

    Hi everyone,

I have installed about 11 Fedora of each Live CD on an HP Pavilion e4400 friend (lspci compares it to an ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility U1) and was not qualified to enable desktop effects – when I tried System->Preferences->Desktop Effects, it redraws all those windows, pauses, and then says: “Desktop effects will not be enabled.”

launch glxgears; glxinfo indicates that direct rendering is enabled.

From this command line ‘compiz using –replace’ gives errors:

compiz (kernel) – Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap missing
compiz (kernel) > Error: Unable to process screen: 0
compiz (kernel); Fatal error: No managed screen purchased on screen:0.0
    .

glxinfo basically gives me two instances of “GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap”, but I can get a third one by specifying “LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true”.

However, when I run ‘LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true compiz –replace’ I get the infamous white touch screen (which still recognizes mouse and keyboard, so behaves like a cube).

I removed the compilation that was on our live CD and installed the full version, but to no avail. I didn’t install any new graphics drivers. I looked around but didn’t see anyone who just solved our problem – any help would be greatly appreciated!

glxinfo suggests enabling direct rendering. Please post the results of the command:

What chipset can I tell by the name of ATI. I also think it might be an old chipset acquiring necessary hardware features? Publish your results:

    Software rasterizer
A bug has been found in the current configuration for a long time (at least):
Bug: The Compiz[-Fusion] rasterizer software you are using requires direct rendering with the appropriate 3D-Real driver, not in the “Software Rasterizer” wherever it is. Aside: IGP 320M appears to be a legacy, completely driverless 3D chipset for Linux (or Windows, for that matter). 3D/DRI missing = no Compiz[-Fusion]. Sorry.

Damn, single friends will be disappointed. Never mind; Thanks for the help – at least I don’t have it, I can keep looking for solutions.

A closer look at Man Radeon reveals that this chipset is supported by the open source Radeon driver that ships with Fedora. Therefore we mustWe need to understand why the 3D factor doesn’t work. Upload the entire /var/log/Xorg.0.log file to pastebin.com (or similar) and see what happens.
